It said that the US and its allies should be aware of “growing, increasingly violent terrorist attacks” and stressed the need to “take immediate action in order to ensure our communities and US air bases are safe from these threats”.

It added: “We cannot afford to let our youth be exposed to violence and terrorism with the tragic consequences that it causes.

“We must be determined not to allow these risks to be repeated and to lead in the face of the growing security risks.

The letter is the latest in a series of protests on behalf of American servicemen who have been killed since the conflict began.

He said the Nato action, along with the US military operations against IS in Iraq and Syria, could lead to war if they did not.
