Cameras and Business Focus Separate Samsung Galaxy S9
In Samsung’s introduction of the new Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones, the company emphasized new camera features, and in doing evetane coque iphone 6 so, underscored how the way we use such devices has changed. While the camera is impressive, I’m intrigued by the new AI features, and by Samsung’s continued push for the Galaxy line to be seen as an enterprise product.
It’s been clear for years that the “phone” part of smartphone has become a smaller and smaller part of what we do with these devices. Texting and messaging, cameras, the Internet and apps, and most recently, video consumption, have taken over from phone calls as the biggest uses of these devices.
DJ Koh, President of Samsung’s IT and Communications Division, said that in today’s world, images are replacing words, and that, rather than writing, capturing and sharing images and video has become the most important expression of who we are. Koh said coque iphone 7 drapeau that last year people took 1.2 trillion photos, and shared 10 billion videos and 5 billion emojis, and nearly all on devices that were designed to be used as phones. This, he said, is what inspired Samsung to create a “breakthrough camera” that sees the world clearly in any light.
It’s an interesting idea cameras are improving, and I certainly see more people sharing and consuming videos than I did just a few years ago. Even reading and writing text I do most on my device to be declining. The “phone” itself has become just another app, and one that is used less and less often at coque apple iphone xs apple that. It may be time to rename these devices and no longer call them “smartphones,” but none of the alternatives I’ve heard so far are particularly appealing. (Calling them “mobiles” just isn’t specific enough.)
As I look at the S9 and S9+, it’s clear that they don’t look very different from last year’s S8 and S8+, with almost identical form coque iphone 6 le bon coin factors and no major changes in the way you’ll use it. Instead, the new devices seem to present more of a refinement: they continue to use 5.8 and 6.2 inch AMOLED coque iphone 6s gucci homme displays an 18.5:9 ratio the “Infinity Display” design, with curved edges and very mall bezels on the top and bottom of the device. The front facing camera is a bit less obvious, and Samsung made a big deal of coque iphone 3gs nike how the phone has “no notch” in the display. The bigger change on the back of the phone is that the fingerprint reader (which still exists) has been moved below the camera, making it less likely you’ll smudge the lens when you unlock the phone. (Still, many competing phones offer more space between the rear fingerprint reader and the camera). And there’s a new color: Lilac Purple.
But again, it’s the changes to the camera system that stand out. The biggest news here is that the main rear facing camera now has a “dual aperture” system, meaning that it uses f/2.4 for daylight pictures, but switches to using an f/1.5 aperture in low light. Samsung says that in low light, 28 percent more light will reach the sensor, resulting in better photos, and compared this to how your eyes adjust to different amounts of light.
Samsung has a created what it calls a super speed dual pixel sensor, with DRAM embedded onto the sensor itself. This makes the sensor much faster, and enables multi frame noise reduction camera takes groups of four photos and uses the detail to reduce the noise in these photos. Samsung said low light photos on the S9 and S9+ will have 30 percent less noise compared to the S8. This has been one area where phone cameras have lagged better standalone cameras, so coque iphone 5c phosphorescent I’ll be interested to see how well it really works.
Samsung has also added what it calls “Super Slow Mo,” a feature that lets you capture images at 960 frames per second, though albeit for only 0.2 seconds at a time. You can set this up to capture images either manually or using automatic motion detection, and later convert these videos into wallpaper or GIFs. It’s interesting, and I look forward to trying it out.
In addition, the S9+ not the smaller S9 has dual cameras, bringing it in line with most of the other bigger phones. It’s set up like the dual cameras on the Galaxy Note 8 or the coque iphone 6 fendi iPhone 8+ or X, with a traditional wide angle lens used in most situations, and a second zoom lens that’s used for things like producing portraits and a bokeh effect.
The camera system is also used for a couple of other more unusual features. The phone can take augmented reality (AR) emojis in which you use a preset character or create your own image, and then animate it using the camera. These emojis can then be used in messages, of course. I’m not the target audience, but it does look kind of fun.
More interesting to me are some of the new features that use what Samsung calls “Bixby Vision,” it’s AI system. With Bixby vision, you can point the camera at a sign in a language you don’t speak and it will translate that sign into your language. It can also identify food or places, and it’s got shopping experiences too, which include things like showing you what you would look like with makeup from Sephora or Cover Girl. I’m not yet clear on how well these services will work or how useful some of these services will be, coque iphone se résistante but they did look good, particularly the sign translation. The company promises more enhancements to its Bixby assistant later in the year.
There are also some interesting innovations in other areas of the phone. This will be the first phone to ship with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip, which supports gigabit LTE with speeds up to 1.2 Gbps. The new process should, of course, be faster than last year’s 835, though it is still coque iphone 4 kpop made on the same 10nm process. Samsung has also added stereo speakers on both the top and bottom of the device.
The phone now comes with the SmartThings app, for controlling the various “smart devices” in your home. Koh made a big deal about how this is an open ecosystem, designed to reduce complexity and fragmentation.
The operating system has been tweaked so that it can now display the lock and home screens in a horizontal layout, which makes it better for multi tasking. Another feature lets you open a second window, and keep the video playing even when you’re getting a text message at the same time.
When I got a demo of the phone, Samsung made a big deal of how this phone was designed for enterprise customers. Most of the new features seems pretty consumer focused, but Samsung pointed out how the camera improvements could also be used in business settings, particularly by first responders, or in manufacturing.
Perhaps the nicest most unusual feature is the continued support for DeX, Samsung’s method for connecting the phone to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to provide a desktop like feel, so enterprises can support one device and employees can use this in place of a laptop. The new version of DeX includes a new DeX Pad, a coque iphone 5s celibataire flat dock for connecting the phone to the monitor that includes an HDMI port, power, and two USB ports. coque iphone 5c holographique It’s different from last year’s model in that by laying flat, you can use it as a keyboard in a pinch. DeX now also supports the latest version of Knox, Samsung’s security environment, and lets managers add a custom logo, and gives them a bit more control.
I’m happy that Samsung didn’t remove two features that to me seem important, even though some companies seem content to remove them. The S9 and S9+ still support a microSD card says technically the phone could handle a 1 TB card, though the biggest ones on the market are 400 GB, which seems like a lot. This is important because taking video 4K video and even more so for slow motion video take up a lot of space very quickly. Other than the microSD card, the phone still has a physical headphone jack.
Of course, there are also features that coque iphone 5 magnetique I wish were ready but aren’t quite there yet. At CES last month, I saw Synaptics demonstrating a Vivo phone that had the fingerprint reader under the glass on the front of the phone. Samsung didn’t move that way, and coque iphone xs jaune silicone instead went with a traditional fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. It’s now below the camera unit, which is an improvement, as you’re less likely to smudge the lens when you use it. And Samsung didn’t implement the kind of advanced face recognition hardware that Apple uses on the iPhone X. Instead, the company continues to push coque iphone 5 gsm55 iris recognition as its preferred biometric method, followed by fingerprint, and then suggests passwords does offer face recognition, but warns that iphone xs max coque cuir apple it isn’t as secure. Samsung suggests that face recognition only be used for unlocking the basic phone, and keeping things like Samsung Pay and corporate email secure using more secure methods.
Overall, while the S9 and S9+ don’t look like huge steps forward from last year’s models, they do look like worthy steps forward, with the new camera features being the most notable changes.
